this is kcrg-tv9 news at 10 . iowa county is investigating a car crash this morning thdt killed a teenaged mother and her young son. 18-year-old bethany clark, of belle plaine, and her two-year-old son roran ... ... were traveling on highway 212, about five les west of marengo, around 7 o'clock. says bethany clark lost control of the car on the frost- a ditch and caught fire. both died at t scene. kcrg-tv9's sarah mccarthy explains how that stretch of road can be dangerous. "the iowa county sheriff says this stretch of road is more prone to accidents than other nearby areasshe says that's because drivivs often don't notice the slight curve here, and take it too fast." according to data from the iowa department of transportation, this is the first fatal crash to happen on
while there have been only two crashes here in the past five years, they have been more serious than before. from 2005 to 2010, the dot took four reports of crashes, but data shows only vehicle damage in those incidents. in 2012, a crash resulting in an injury happened. thursday's crash marks the most severe incident. "the iowa county sheriff says frost covered roads likely caused clark to crash this morning - not speed. but he hopes drivers will remember to slow down in this area, especially when it's icy. in iowa county, sarah mccarthy, kcrg-tv9 news." frost also played a factor in a two-vehicle crash that sent three people to the hospital in fayette county. it happened shortly before eight this morning at highway 150 and 190th street. that's just south of west union. the fayette county sheriff's office says 23 year old sara shaffer of waterloo lost control of her car on the frost- covered ro and crashed into another vehicle. firr responders

police chiefs from our four major cities - along with fayette, ames, davenport and even a u.s. attorney - met here at the cedarapids police department for 3 hours. this was all donon very quietly, with no advanced notice for local media, which may have allowed a more open exchange of ideas today... the concerns of gun violence remains a component of everyday life in some parts of the country, even at times in eastern iowa. just last weekend, three separate shootings on the east side of cedar rapids didn't kill anyone -- but served as a reminder of the threat. " 22:45 we're all dealing with it and tackling it..." which led to thursday's three-hour meeting at cedar rapids police headquarters. seven police chiefs and a u.s. attorney in a
figure out how to minimize gun violence in each city. " chief trelka, from waterloo, said these law enforcement units have agreed to continue talks like this on a regular basis. yet the challenge remains on ideas vs. expenses -- how each police
an ea and try to implement it using the current budget. live in cedar rapids, chris earl, kcrg-tv9. cities, townships, and school districts in linn county can move forward in determining their new annual budgets. today, county auditor joeleliller ceceified the annual valuation report after computer system issues had delayed it for several weeks. the report helps entities like cities with their budgeting process. the computer system has had other issues in the past. iowa city's city manager is leaving to take a job in lawrence, kansas. tom markus has served iowa city for the last five years. he will be the city manager in lawrence... a town of about 93-thousand people that's the home of the university of kansas. markus begins his new job in march.
dollars in construction work is nearing completion in iowa city. much of the work is happening on the university of iowa's arts and music campuses. in may the new arts building will open. then in june work at the new hancher auditorium will wrap up. and in august crews will finish work on the voxman music building. the buildings replace several buildings destroyed in the 2008 flood. "those who are going into the buildings have persevered during this interim time and they too celebrate seeing the building comtogether, it means a lot because it's a real symbol of this university and community's recovery from the flood. " crews are also planning to complete the new 360 million dollar children's hospital by the end of the year. tonight, we're hearing from the iowa man who won two million dollars last night playing powerball. brian stewart is from the onawa and works as a security officer at a nearby casino.

isis is now claiming responsibility for the attacks in the heart of indonesia's capital city, jakarta. authorities say the suspects who killed two people were trying to mimic the paris attacks two months ago. the seven attackers were armed with an arsenal of handguns, grenades and homemade bombs. they tossed two bombs into a starbucks before opening fire on customers. moments later, two attackers blew themselves up. about 10 minutes later, two more attackers killed a passerby and injured a police officer. indonesian authorities say five of the attackererare
